Why Obedience Training is Important for Your Dog

dog-trainingDogs are wonderful pets that can make such an important difference in our lives. Pets become part of the family and provide unconditional love and affection when properly trained. Often, obedience training is the best way to nurture and develop relationships with our pets. Dog training offers a number of benefits to pet owners and dogs.

Signs Your Dog May Need Training

Amazingly, many pet owners let their dogs get away with poor behavior because they think they’ll grow out of it, learn eventually or simply don’t know how to train their dogs. These common signs are usually a good indication that a dog could benefit from training.

  • Taking the dog for a walk in Lakewood using a leash is just this side of a nightmare with the dog pulling hard, running too fast and almost tripping the owner.
  • The dog barks constantly at vehicles driving down the street, birds in the yard or neighbors pulling into their driveways.
  • Out of control dogs that are constantly getting into trouble for digging in the yard, chewing on carpeting or jumping on small children.
  • Dogs that don’t understand the most basic of commands like sitting, come or stop, which makes it difficult to control and interact with.

Benefits of Obedience Training

Developing and Strengthening a Bond With a Dog

Bonding usually begins the moment a dog comes into a home. However, it only strengthens when a dog owner works with a dog and interacts with them. Little by little the dog picks up signs of what pleases their owner or displeases them and how they should respond. While bonding, owners also learn about the dog’s personality, likes, dislikes and his learning abilities.

Training together gives both the owner and the dog time to learn about each other, build a relationship, form trust and bond as friends.

Happier Lives

Generally, dogs are happier when they can spend time with their owners, go to the park, take walks and even meet new people. These types of activities can only work when dogs have undergone some form of dog training.

Consequently, dog owners are delighted and proud to be able to show off their well-mannered dog at a park, take him in the car to run errands or have friends over without the fear of their dog jumping all over guests.

Trained Dogs Have Mobility and More Freedom

Sadly, untrained dogs frequently get left behind at home because they can be a hassle to take anywhere when they can’t walk on a lease or resist the temptation to jump on people.

Fortunately, when a dog has completed an obedience program, a whole new world opens up for both the dog and the owner.

Well behaved dogs are a pleasure to take to the beach, hiking or camping. Going to the pet groomers, kennel or dog daycare is easy and becomes an enjoyable experience.

Pet Training Could Save Lives

Often, young puppies or untrained dogs are likely to bolt out the door and can easily be run over by a car or become lost. When a dog has been trained and understands voice commands, owners may issue a simple command to get them to return to the home or stop them from running into the street.

In addition, if a pet becomes lost and ends up at a dog pound, trained dogs are more easily adopted than some that misbehave.

Pet Owners Learn From Training

Training a dog requires lots of concentration, interaction and provides owners with time to learn about their pet’s characteristics and attitudes.

Pet owners also learn to watch responses, body language and know when their dog doesn’t understand a signal or a command. Once an owner learns these essential clues, training goes smoother and dogs learns quicker.

Pet Peeves

Pet Peeves has more than 30 years of experience providing pet care and kennel services in a friendly country setting in Golden and serves residents of Lakewood, and nearby areas.

We specialize in dog daycare, dog boarding, consulting and training. Pet Peeves provides attention, care and plenty of space for dogs in clean facilities. Dogs visiting our facilities receive reinforcement training to make pets happier, improve manners and easier to manage.

Training Techniques

We believe that all dogs should be treated with respect and compassion during training. Therefore, old harsh training methods are never employed in our facility. Instead, we use clicker training, which is a humane and fun way for the dog to learn and train.

Clicker training is simple to learn for pet owners and helps to shape and modify behavior using positive methods. The system works by reinforcing positive behavior with a click and a bite of their favorite food.

Pet Peeves offers three levels of training for basic, intermediate and advanced classes. Pets can receive training at our facility by the course, hourly, private or in group classes.

Dog Daycare

Dogs of every size, age, personality and temperament are organized by play groups and welcome in the Golden facility. Indoor facilities include 5,000 sq. feet of space with air conditioning and heated floors. Dogs are free to romp about and play with other dogs in the 42,000 sq. feet of outdoor play areas.

Placing a dog with us for a day is often a special treat for many dogs that enjoy a change in their environment and love the opportunity to socialize and meet other dogs.

Dog Boarding

Boarding a dog or placing him in daycare with us is often an ideal solution when owners may have business meetings or need care for their dogs while they are away. Dog owners can rest assured their pets receive professional care in a clean, healthy environment.

Dogs always receive fresh air, exercise and special diets at no additional charge. We are happy to accommodate dogs with special needs for blindness, deafness, seizures or senior dogs that may require a little extra care.

Pet owners looking to strengthen relationships, bond and improve their dog’s manners, should consider the benefits of obedience training.
